These principles we formally introduced in Japan’s Diet ** Also know as Japan’s parliament ** in the year 1971.
Does Japan Have The Capability To Build Nuclear Weapons ?
As we all know that Japan does not have nuclear weapons but it has all the required resources and technology to build, if it chooses to build a one from scratch. As an add on Japan possess resources like Plutonium, advance missile & aerospace technology and has access to uranium enrichment technology.
Because of this Japan as a country is always referred to ” Nuclear Threshold State ” which literally means that a country can develop a nuclear weapon in a very short time if it decides to have a one.
Japan & Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)
Japan is a signatory of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and plays a leading role in the global forum in disarmament and Non Proliferation efforts. Japan as a country uses moral authority and as victim of nuclear attacks to push other countries to go nuclear free.
Japan is classified as a Non Nuclear State and allows regular inspection by the IAEA – International Atomic Energy Agency, just to make sure that its nuclear material is not used or diverted for military use.
Regional Security Concerns
Despite Japan’s neutral stand. Japan constantly faces a regional threats especially from North Korea’s nuclear program, Russia & China’s growing military power. And North Korea’s repeatedly missile tests over Japanese territory water have sparked debates about weather Japan should consider nuclear weapons and deterrence policy.
However Japan fully relies on America for its security. The American – Japan security pact energy ensures that if Japan is attacked in any form, US will come to Japan’s defense.
There is a strong opposition among Japanese people against nuclear weapon. Peace movements in Hiroshima & Nagasaki continue to campaign against having nuclear weapons.
If at all Japan acquires a nuclear weapon, this could trigger a arms race in Asia leading to instability among regional powers. This could also damage Japan’s image on the international stage. Such a move could violate international treaties and also invite economic sanctions.
